The Importance of Monitoring Your Progress

Whether you’re working on a general dentistry goal, a professional project, or your health and wellness, monitoring your progress is an important part of any successful journey. Getting clear on goals, breaking them down into manageable tasks, leveraging tools for tracking, and regularly reviewing and reflecting can all make the difference when it comes to navigating obstacles, celebrating milestones, and ensuring that you’re staying on track towards success.

In three studies, we investigated how people monitor their goal progress – specifically, how frequently they compare their current state to the past or to a target state – and identified the factors that influence this behavior. We found that people are more likely to monitor their progress when:

The goals that they are most confident they can achieve (e.g., a health-related goal or a work related goal) and when the goals are represented in quantifiable terms (e.g., counting calories or steps). Furthermore, we found that people are less likely to monitor their progress when they have worked on a goal for a long period of time and that the more time has passed since the start of their pursuit of the goal, the more difficult it is for them to assess their progress.

Tracking your progress is a powerful tool that enhances focus and motivation, keeps you engaged and committed to the goal, and provides the data necessary to identify areas for improvement and to ensure that efforts are aligned with overarching strategic objectives. This dedicated approach to monitoring also helps build accountability and credibility as you communicate successes and milestones with others.
