Fire Rated Shutters – The Pros and Cons

Fire rated shutters are metal, roll-up shutters that are fastened above windows or doors and can be activated in the event of an emergency to help limit or stop the spread of fire throughout your property. They’re a robust line of defence in your fire safety arsenal, but it’s important to understand the pros and cons before investing in this solution for your business or commercial space.

Fire shutters are different to security shutters in that they’re primarily fire-resistant and include an automatic closing function when the alarm is triggered (a feature not available with security shutters). They’re designed to fit discreetly into indoor doorways or openings, becoming visible only once deployed.

Maximizing Safety with Fire Rated Shutters: Features and Installation

They’re ideal for any premises where a high level of fire protection is required, including warehouses, factories, kitchens and offices. They can be supplied with a 1, 2 or 4-hour fire rating, and are usually powered by either a three-phase (415V) or single-phase (240V) power supply.

Our UL-listed fire counter shutters have a fully welded integral frame and are pre-assembled at the factory for fitting into window openings without the need for field assembly. The painted 22-gauge galvanized steel slats are interlocked with alternate stainless or galvanized steel end locks to create a sturdy curtain that complies with UL, c-UL, and FM standards for 3-hour, 1-1/2-hour, and 3/4-hour fire ratings. They can also be fitted with smoke and draft control, which is often a requirement when meeting local business codes.
