Types of Attic Insulation

Insulation is often the first home improvement that comes to mind, and rightly so. It keeps heat inside, reduces energy bills and helps to create a comfortable indoor atmosphere. It also has environmental benefits, with less energy consumption and the subsequent emission of fewer greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. Insulation is especially important in the attic, which is closest to the house and subject to extreme weather conditions. It’s essential that it is installed correctly to maximize the benefits. Hiring experienced professionals ensures that no gaps or corners are left exposed, and that all safety precautions are taken.

There are four main types of spray foam insulation: fiberglass batts, loose-fill, cellulose and spray foam. Depending on the square footage of your attic and other factors, one type may be more appropriate than another. It all boils down to your budget, preference and the level of DIY experience you are willing to tackle.

Common Signs Your Attic Needs New Insulation

Fiberglass batts are the least expensive option and are easy to install yourself if you’re handy. However, you will need to wear a mask and protective gear since fiberglass is a lung and skin irritant. Loose-fill insulation involves blowing bags of cellulose, fiberglass or rockwool into place with a machine specially designed for this purpose. These materials are more expensive than fiberglass, but offer greater R-values and a more soundproof home environment.

Cellulose and spray foam are the most expensive options, but they offer the highest R-values per inch. They are also the only attic insulation that acts as an air barrier, sealing any cracks or gaps.
