Vaginal Smell During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are many changes that take place in your body. Some of these changes include an increase in vaginal discharge that’s heavier and stickier than normal. The odor of the discharge may change during pregnancy, as well.

BV can cause a fishy odor and unusual vaginal discharge. It can also be associated with preterm labor and low baby birth weight.

Yeast infection: You are more likely to get this during pregnancy than in the past due to the hormones. It’s best treated by a topical antifungal medication.

Trichomoniasis: This infection is also common in pregnant women and can be treated with a topical cream. It can also be diagnosed with a blood test.

The most common causes of a strong vaginal smell during pregnancy are bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection. Yeast infections are usually treated with topical or oral medication.

If you have a strong smell during pregnancy and it’s accompanied by pain, redness or itchiness, it’s best to see your doctor. You may need antibiotics to treat an infection and reduce the likelihood of preterm labor.
